Our author
Professional writer Rachel Beckett
Although more often working as an editor of non fiction for children and adults, our professional writer is more than happy to consider commissions for children’s non fiction books, on subjects that relate to her research interests, including visual art, history of art, mathematics education and sustainability or environmental education.
Children’s non fiction books
Example: Medieval Art
Our professional writer Rachel Beckett was commissioned to write the Medieval Art volume of the Encyclopedia for Young People (Chelsea House, New York). Rachel managed the early stages of the project, as well as writing the book, drawing up a contents list and planning the content. She researched and wrote the text and provided picture briefs. After the design and picture research work was complete she checked the proofs and compiled the index.
Our author studied History of Art for her first degree, later working for Macmillan on what was later to become Grove Art Online. Art continues to be a research interest.
Rachel is interested in taking on other similar projects, not just arts-related but on any general topics for children.

Children’s learning resources
Functional mathematics, sustainability and wildlife
Our professional writer has written for mathematics educational revision guides and has also written learning resources for educational charity the Hamilton Trust. As a qualified mathematics teacher, she has a great interest in rich mathematics tasks for children, helping them to relate their mathematical learning to real-life situations. She also has exciting ideas for learning resources relating to sustainability education and wildlife heritage.
Rachel would welcome approaches from publishers regarding the following projects still at draft stage:
- Mathematics interactive and kinetic learning resources, including a series of rich tasks presented via interactive PowerPoints.
- Blue Ring project, seeking to provide teacher lesson plans and learning resources aimed at embedding sustainability into the National Curriculum.
- Worts and Weeds project, aiming to engage British young people with their wildlife heritage. The intention would be to create an informative, engaging illustrated text for each species, written in non-technical language, and including the social and cultural significance of each species. This could be in the form of an e-book or an online platform. The link above provides initial examples, but Rachel has also developed a full headword list.
