Lilliput Tales, flash fiction written for Twitter

A Twitter story from flash fiction collection Lilliput Tales.

Lilliput Tales is a collection of flash fiction (or micro fiction) stories, written for Twitter by R A H Beckett @LilliputTales (limited edition of 100). Each consists of only 140 characters (to fit the old style Twitter format), together with an illustration. These little ‘twiction’ flash fiction snippets cover many aspects of the human experience, from joie-de-vivre and desire, to self-searching and disillusionment.

Get into the head of a guy who’s afraid of commitment, a woman who camouflages her love, and a teacher who encounters his C-grade student in a BMW. Many more characters present a wide range of captivating human dilemmas.

The illustrated 24-page paperback is printed on coated cartridge paper and comes with a dust jacket. The stories are intended for adults and contain some mild adult content.

The special price of £5 including UK p&p (overseas £7 sterling) reflects that these books were published in 2011 and the saddle stitching (two staples) may show some rusting. The Marigold by R A H Beckett is a short illustrated story (limited edition of 100), a romantic tale of two shy people who both work in the same faded little French theatre. Will the Marigold be the setting for one more romance?

Illustrated with wood engravings by the author, the 16-page paperback book is printed on heavyweight cream paper and comes with a dust jacket.

Note: This book is an original concept and was published in 2010, before the launch of John Madden’s film The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

Aurora’s Spindle by Rachel Beckett is a collection of short retellings for adults of ten well-known traditional fairy tales or nursery rhymes, each 100 words long with an illustration (limited edition of 100). A drabble, named after the author Margaret Drabble, is a 100-word story, though Rachel did not know this when she decided to write each story in her collection at exactly 100 words in length.

Rachel’s ten drabbles provide an unexpected take on these tales with their vivid themes — princesses, frogs and that magic spindle. What is Rapunzel really escaping from? Whom did Cinderella find even more charming than Prince Charming?

From this short story collection – succinct, humorous and often thought-provoking – the reader will gain a fresh perspective on some familiar scenarios. Slightly surreal, with a dose of the unexpected, these illustrated tales may feel more believable than the originals that inspired them.

The 24-page paperback is illustrated in colour, printed on coated cartridge paper and comes with a dust jacket.

The Victorian novel

Wives and Daughters by Mrs Gaskell – an ending

Last chapter for Mrs Gaskell's Wives and Daughters by Rachel Beckett.
Last chapter for Mrs Gaskell’s Wives and Daughters by Rachel Beckett.

Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell’s Wives and Daughters was described by Laurence Lerner as ‘the most underrated novel in English’. The exceptional merits of this tender story may have been overlooked owing to the fact that it lacks a final chapter, Mrs Gaskell having died in 1865 when it was only days away from completion.

The novel relates how Molly Gibson coped with her father’s hard-as-nails new wife and a lively irreverent stepsister, along with the trials of being an intellectual and sensitive young woman often eclipsed by others.

Professional writer Rachel A H Beckett has written what Elizabeth Gaskell enthusiasts have always longed for: the absent ending to this novel, carefully composed in Mrs Gaskell’s style and in accordance with her narrative intentions.
